Speaker’s Corner and Sodexho February 26, 2006

I’m starting to make headway on my plans to take back the lower caf.

Last Friday I met with the VP of Finance, Jim Poulsen, and Brad Wallbank, Manager of Housing Services. We chatted about re-evaluating the food choices available at the lower caf and creating an affordable, healthier alternative that was available to students during a broader range of hours during the week.

I pitched my vision to them and they seemed to be excited about it. Here it is: every Friday afternoon, 12-2, we have Speaker’s Corner in the Lower Caf. This would involve some speeches, a cheap lunch, and an art show. Let me go over those in more detail.

Speeches: Two or three students sign up for a five to ten minute spot to talk about whatever they wish. The topics are vetted but can be provocative and challenging. Each speaker is asked to prepare two discussion questions to stimulate dialogue about their speech. Discussion goes for about 20 minutes per speaker.

Cheap Lunch: We convince Sodexho that it would be economically viable for them to cook 15 or so lunches every week that were a lot healthier than what they currently provide at the Lower Caf. TWUSA would subsidize the cost of these lunches so that it would cost students only a buck or two to eat.

Art Show: Each week, we get five or ten pieces of art to put up in the lower caf for Friday afternoon. These art pieces are for sale and all proceeds would go to some good cause, either the Art Department or a charity.
