Taking back the lower caf February 3, 2006

Campaigning officially started at midnight tonight, and I’ve managed to hand out a good number of my flyers (which you can see here to late night snackers at the lower caf.

The biggest question I’ve received so far is about my plans for “taking back the lower caf with music, art and dance.” What exactly is it I plan to do?

Well, instead of just answering that, let me paint a picture of what the LC could be.

Imagine walking into the LC. But this time, instead of being greeted with stone gray walls, you see a bunch of art hanging up. You walk over to check it out, and realize that the piece you’re looking at is in fact by your friend Jorge, the art major. The art is for sale and all proceeds are going to help orphans in Nigeria.

You line up to get one of those new wraps they’re offering and hear a song that sounds strangely familiar. A quick question to someone else in line and you realize that you’re listening to Cran, a one-man band from our very own Johnny Hughes. After you’ve placed your order you go over to the speaker system and check out some of the cover art from other TWU bands.

Finally, you sit down with your chicken fingers just below the raised stage. You’ve come here today to take part in the latest Speaker’s Corner, a weekly event where students are given up to 10 minutes to talk about whatever they want and another 20 minutes for discussion.

You check the schedule of speakers: today we’ve got someone talking about a recent movie they saw that dealt with missionaries and how they end up altering the cultures they attempt to reach. After that, there’s someone talking about a new student group that’s joined with some local Langley members trying to ban the Casino in Langley. You learn that the casino made almost $20 million in its first few months of existence.

The final speaker didn’t show up, so the group (about fifteen or so) ends up talking about how TWU students could have more of a positive impact on Langley, not just through Fall Workdays but also through business partnerships. Maybe sending a volunteer team to help the used bookstore guy by Liquidation World organization his overflowing bookshelves.

You leave the LC after an hour filled with good food and great ideas, having had a great conversation with a few people that you hadn’t even met before. And the best thing is, you can do this each week - the art constantly changes, the music is always different, and there’s always something new to talk about.

That is taking back the lower caf.

need a quick update and a picture of the fair maiden. My role is to act as a partial screening device to all those things that distract and defeat the enemy while the mind of God is at work to bring truth into the light of day .
