Thank you to voters February 11, 2006
Posted by mwj as twu, twusa. trackback. Thanks to all those who voted in the TWUSA elections this year. 536 students made their voices heard this week as they cast their vote for who would be the next leaders of our student association.
Some questions were asked about why candidates were running uncontested for four out of the five positions. Here are three possible answers:
1) People are generally apathetic and don’t care about student governance.
2) People are generally happy with the way TWUSA operated this year and didn’t much object to the same people being shuffled around a bit and continuing their roles.
3) TWUSA didn’t advertise enough.
I think there is a mix of all three, although the first sounds so cynical and I don’t want it to be true. In any event, I’ll be running elections next year, and I would like to see more than one candidate run for each of the positions. I would also like to see more that 20% of the student body participate in the democratic process - I’ll be aiming to double that and see about 1000 students voting.
