Who said we weren’t supposed to get political? April 27, 2006
Posted by mwj as governance, politics, twu. add a comment. From the Guardian on a recent piece about the cost of education:
‘Going to university is about more than earning money. It is about getting involved in student life - getting involved in political and democratic bodies, setting up or joining a society and meeting lots of people.’
If our education isn’t going to be worth beans to us after we get out into the real world, what’s so bad about a little bit of political advocacy inside the bubble? Notice the use of “student life” and “democratic bodies” in the same sentence: something completely foreign to TWU.
Thanks to Matt for this one.
Video games lead to domestic shooting
Posted by mwj as crime, games, journalism, news, world of warcraft. add a comment.Ok, so the headline is a little sensational, but apparently a dispute between a father and his 24 year old son led to the father shooting a wall three feet away from his son’s head. He had threatened to shoot the monitor after the son refused to do laundry and continued playing games (I’d bet on World of Warcraft).

Now that I’ve got a job that actually requires me to be a regular surfer, I figured that a snazzy website was a high enough priority to actually get something done.

At the Fourth Station, where Jesus is helped by Simon the Cyrene to carry the cross, Pope Benedict and his followers will pray: “Lord Jesus, our affluence is making us less human, our entertainment has become a drug, a source of alienation, and our society’s incessant, tedious message is an invitation to die of selfishness.”

In an era of structured education and standardized testing, this generational difference might not yet be evident. But the gamers’ mindset - the fact that they are learning in a totally new way - means they’ll treat the world as a place for creation, not consumption. This is the true impact videogames will have on our culture.
