At the Fourth Station, where Jesus is helped by Simon the Cyrene to carry the cross, Pope Benedict and his followers will pray: “Lord Jesus, our affluence is making us less human, our entertainment has become a drug, a source of alienation, and our society’s incessant, tedious message is an invitation to die of selfishness.”
Another blistering attack on the moral degradation of our society is itself a bit tedious, but I like the bit about entertainment becoming a drug and a source of alienation.
It conjurs up images in my head of faces half-lit in the flickering screens of our obsessions, beauty and art mediated through vague arrangements of photons on the glass walls of our cells: “It is impossible to say just what I mean! / But as if a magic lantern through the nerves in patterns on a screen…”
