PINR released a report last Friday that charted the rising star of Venezuela beyond US horizons. Chavez has been looking to China for some time now as an alternative energy trading partner to the US. This is part of his strategy to free Venezuela from dependence on American markets.

Games and the culture of silence May 21, 2006

Dr. Ian Bogost published an excellent article today about the way in which American mainstream press handled the story of the Super Columbine Massacre RPG. The game (and web site) has pretty strong content, with the potential to make some queasy and others offended. However, as Bogost mentioned before, the efforts made by the game’s creator to examine the motives behind the Columbine massacre are “brave, sophisticated, and worthy of praise.”

Ok, so I couldn’t resist. Here is a screenshot of the game I am developing for Nexen. It is a very early draft, but the game is about managing geographical data when you’re trying to drill a well and is tentatively titled The GeoGame.

There’s a growing market out there of people who want the occasional online gaming fix without having to devote the hundreds of hours needed to make games like World of Warcraft worth the twenty bucks a month. These players are the casual gamers, and the games they play are called casual games.

Conflict of interest at TWU May 9, 2006

At Trinity Western University, the newspaper is run a bit like it was in the Soviet Union. One man is resonsible for appointing the editor of the school newspaper, Mars’ Hill. This same man is also the chief advisor to the student government, TWUSA. This same man is also the only person on the final appeals board for “accountability” (i.e. disciplinary) issues. This same man is also in charge of the most ubiquitous campus institution, Student Life.

Indie game market continues to grow May 5, 2006

Game Trove is the newest addition to a growing number of sites dedicated to the indie gaming phenomenon. Game Trove seeks to “puts the users in touch with the developers” by cutting out the middleman (big label producers). It’s only been online for 20 days, but has logged over four thousand game downloads.
